Shear Banded Couplings

Fernco Shear Banded Couplings are specifically designed to connect and repair pipes on adopted sewer and drainage applications, as required by the UK water companies. The stainless steel central band protects the joint under shear loads and helps to keep the joining pipes aligned, helping to prevent pipe displacement.

  • Withstands internal pressure of up to 2.5 bar
  • Stainless steel shear band helps prevent pipe displacement
  • Less excavation compared to replacing a whole length of pipe
  • Approved to WIS 4-41-01 Flexible couplings for gravity sewerage and drainage pipes
  • Complies to BS EN 681-1:1996, BS EN 295-4:2013 & BS EN 10088-2:1995

    Introduction to Shear Banded Couplings

Fernco manufactures the most extensive range of shear banded couplings available in the marketplace and has revolutionised traditional pipe repair methods over the years. Fernco Shear Banded Couplings are specifically designed to connect and repair pipes on adopted sewer and drainage applications.

Shear banded couplings are a requirement of the UK water companies when connecting onto their assets. This requirement forms part of Water Industry Specification (WIS) 4-41-01, which outlines the requirements to connect pipes on adopted systems using only shear banded couplings.

Fernco Shear Banded Couplings have the ability to connect two pipes with the same or similar outside diameter (OD), and also have the flexibility to accommodate small differences in pipe OD’s. When the pipe OD’s are outside of the limitations of a Shear Banded Coupling, ‘Bushes’ can be used to make up the annual space between the smaller pipe OD and the Shear Banded Coupling.

The shear band on this range of couplings gives the connection added protection against shear loads that could cause the pipes to become mis-aligned.

    Straight Connections vs Adaptor Connections

    Straight Connection

Connect pipes with the same outside diameters simply, with the use of a Fernco Shear Banded Coupling.

    Adaptor Connection

Connect pipes with differing outside diameters with a Fernco Shear Banded Coupling in conjunction with a Bush(es).

    Standard Couplings: 50mm – 620mm

Fernco Standard Couplings are a range of set size shear banded couplings covering the most common connection requirements. With the most comprehensive range and stock holding in the market, Fernco supply the smallest domestic projects to the largest global projects with ease.

Sizes start from 50mm up to 620mm, after which Fernco can manufacture to specific size requirements. See technical datasheet download for list of sizes available.

All Fernco Standard Couplings are manufactured in accordance to ISO 9001:2015 and comply with BS EN 295-4:2013 and WIS 4-41-01, suitable for private and adopted (public) drainage and sewers.

    Applications

When used individually or combined with bushes, Fernco Standard Couplings have many applications in the construction, repair and maintenance of pipe systems:

    • As a joint for plain ended pipes
    • Repair and maintenance of existing pipelines
    • Connecting short and cut lengths of pipe
    • Making post construction connections to an existing pipeline
    • Reconnection of laterals on renovated sewers
    • Introducing a rocker pipe outside manholes or structures
    • When used with bushes can accommodate differing pipe diameters

    Benefits

    • Withstands an internal pressure of up to 2.5 bar
    • A proven, tested and durable coupling design ensuring a high performance and a reliable connection
    • Stainless steel shear band provides excellent resistance to heavy loads and shear forces to ensures joint integrity and pipe alignment
    • Complies with WIS 4-41-01 (all public sewers and sewers for adoption)
    • Complies with BS EN 295 Part 4 & EN681-1: 1996 requirements for vitrified clay pipes and fittings

Large Couplings: 300mm – any size

All of Fernco’s Large Diameter Couplings are made to order for specific projects, meaning each coupling is a perfect fit for the pipe that it’s made for. All that Fernco needs to know is the outside diameter and material of the pipes to be connected.

Fernco large couplings feature unique high torque bolts which maximise the contact pressure between the coupling and the pipe, thus providing a strong, reliable seal. Each large Fernco coupling is supplied with a 13mm socket with 3/8” square drive to ensure installers are well equipped.

    Large Coupling Variants

Large couplings are 190mm wide as standard but depending on the application it’s sometimes necessary to opt for a wider option. Fernco can offer the following widths made-to-measure to any pipe diameter from 300/400mm.

    Large Couplings

Close-up of Fernco's Large Shear Banded Coupling featuring four blue rectangular components, silver cylindrical rods on a Shear Band surrounded by black rubber.

    Size range: 400mm +
    Width: 190mm

Application: Used to connect two plain ended pipes above 400mm, usually in cases when drainage lines are being extended and therefore socket connections are not present. Connections to concrete pipes above 400mm should use Large Couplings as opposed to Standard Couplings.

    Extra Wide Large Couplings

Close-up of Fernco's Extra Wide Shear Banded Coupling featuring four blue rectangular components, silver cylindrical rods on a Wide Shear Band surrounded by black rubber.

    Size range: 400mm +
    Width: 300mm

Application: Used to connect two pipes where a cut section has left the pipe end uneven or not square to the axis of the pipe; this coupling will bridge the gap. Extra Wide Large Couplings are usually used as standard on pipes above 1000mm to compensate for this and for improved angular deflection. Extra Wide Large Couplings are to be used on Twinwall pipes from 600mm as the sealing zone covers more ribs that the narrower Large Coupling.

    Magnum Couplings

    Size range: 300mm +
    Width: 370mm

Application: Used to connect two pipes where a cut section has left a pipe end severely uneven or not square to the axis of the pipe. Additional bolts with the Magnum Coupling provides extra strength.
