Fernco is refreshing its commitment to protecting homes and businesses from rising flood risks by supporting the government’s Be Flood Ready initiative. With one in four UK properties expected to be at risk by 2050, and flood alerts currently in place across the country as we head towards “a wetter, windier autumn than usual”, proactive protection has never been more urgent.
“Flood levels are continuing to rise across the UK, and climate change is making extreme weather increasingly unpredictable,” says Ryan Lockwood, National Sales and Marketing Manager of Fernco. “The UK Government has pledged £2.65 billion for flood prevention, but less than £100,000 is allocated to PFR (Property Flood Resilience). Our campaign aims to fill that gap by giving property owners practical, affordable solutions to protect their homes and businesses.”
Fernco offers a range of easy-to-install PFR devices as part of their Fernco Flood Protection range, including non-return valves, backwater valves, anti-flood air bricks and covers, flap valves, and Fernco Floodbags – a lighter, more effective alternative to traditional sandbags. Featured in the Householder’s Directory of PFR by flood resilience advocate Mary Long-Dhonau OBE (aka Flood Mary), these solutions can reduce flood damage by up to 70%, lower repair costs, and even help decrease insurance premiums.
During Flood Action Week in October, the Fernco team will host trade mornings and open days at selected Builders’ Merchants across the UK. These events will showcase live demos of Fernco’s Flood Protection products, with invitations extended to local councils, emergency services, and the wider community. The aim is to educate, empower, and equip homeowners and landlords with the knowledge and tools to reduce flood risk.
“Right now, there’s a lack of awareness of the benefits of flood protection solutions. For many homeowners and businesses, they might not even be on the radar. And for others, it may feel like an optional expense,” adds Ryan.
“But in reality, prevention isn’t just possible, it’s affordable – and we’re working hard to ensure PFR products are more widely accessible too, through our work with Builder’s Merchants. Through collaboration, education, and practical solutions, we’re helping communities across the UK take control of their flood risk and avoid the devastating costs of damage and displacement.”
