Saddles for Plastic Storm Pipe

Saddles for Plastic Storm Pipe

Fernco’s range of Storm-T saddles for plastic stormwater/rainwater pipes are a more flexible options than pipe junctions when connecting lateral (or branch) pipes into main drain pipelines.

  • Universal to the nominal diameter of both the main pipe and lateral pipe
  • Easy to install
  • No tools required – install by hand once cored hole is made
  • No adhesives, sealant or concrete required
  • Eliminates need to pre-order a factory made junction
  • Reduces material and labour costs
  • Increases positioning flexibility
  • Small and lightweight, easy to transport and handle for quick installation
  • Installation unaffected by weather conditions
  • Robust and should not be damaged under normal site conditions
  • The internal seal follows the curvature of the pipe
  • Does not obstruct flow – featuring tapered edges inside the pipe to aid flow and prevent snags
  • Fernco tested and passed under the same conditions as our other saddle ranges

    Introduction & Uses

Fernco have designed the Fernco Storm-T, a universal lateral connection saddle.

The Fernco Storm-T is a lateral pushfit saddle, designed to connect DN150 lateral pipes into primarily structured-wall, twinwall, and smooth wall plastic stormwater and rainwater host pipes.

With an innovative pushfit design, we have created our fastest and most universal saddle to date to ensure the market has an ‘off the shelf’ solution that keeps installation times and costs to a minimum.

    Universal
Specific features of the saddle ensure that the unit can securely fit to various types of plastic pipe. These features include a depth setting mechanism, which allows the user to easily secure the saddle into the optimum position when being installed, allowing the saddle to achieve maximum performance on multiple thicknesses of pipe. The Fernco Storm-T also includes a tapered seal to connect to the inside of the lateral pipe; connecting internally ensures that any DN150 lateral pipe can be accommodated.

Saddles offer the same solution as pipe junctions, for example, lateral pipes from new industrial units, road gullies etc need to be connected into the system mains. Both saddles and junctions offer this connection but with clear differences in the installation methods.

Junction method: excavation of the existing main pipeline around the entire external surface area, a section of pipe cut and removed, and pipe junction lifted into place and connected.

Saddle method: excavation to a small top section of the main pipeline, a core hole created and the saddle connected into the cored hole.

Here are some of the main benefits:

    • Lower materials cost – the larger the pipes the greater the savings become
    • Savings in labour time and cost
    • Significantly reduced excavation requirements
    • No heavy lifting equipment required
    • Improved health & safety

    Unique Features

The Fernco Storm-T has been specifically designed as a lateral connection for stormwater (or surface water) pipes. Our product design team have interrogated all of the issues with similar connections and tested multiple product feature options to bring to market a saddle, we believe, is the best solution for its application, combining ease of installation and high performance.

The connection has undergone testing both in-house and in site conditions, against Fernco’s stringent and wide ranging criteria.

    Depth Setting System

    Fernco Storm-T Depth Setting System

The depth setting system allows the installer to easily lock the rubber body in place, ensuring the tapered seal on the inside of the pipe remains in contact with the inside of the pipe. The system includes multiple depth options, making the connection universal for a multitude of pipe brands and profiles and thus different pipe thicknesses.

    Internal Pushfit Rubber

    Storm-T Internal Pushfit Rubber

The internal pushfit rubber is a ribbed design, which provides multiple sealing zones to the internal surface of a DN150 (150mm internal diameter) lateral pipe. By utilising the internal surface of the lateral pipe, the Fernco Storm-T becomes universal to pretty much all DN150/150mm ID lateral pipe materials, including smooth plastic, twinwall plastic, clay, cast iron etc. The tapered edges of the internal pushfit rubber ensures a free-flowing transition for surface water.

    Tapered Finish Inside the Pipe

Fernco Storm-T tapered finish inside pipe

The finish inside the pipe follows the curvature of the internal pipe surface, unlike similar flat bottomed seals. This feature ensures bore intrusion is minimised and to give even more peace of mind, the finish is tapered, ensuring little to no impact on free flowing surface water.
